Welcome to Artopia
Artopia Gallery is committed to showcasing the work of Kimberley artists who are each unique and talented in their own right. The artists involved with the gallery use a variety of form across fine art, photography, sculpture and giftware.
These original and rich works are a feast for the eyes. Whether you are looking to take a piece of the Kimberley home with you or for a haven to relax and share in the creativity of Artopia's artists, the experience created in Artopia Gallery is not one to be missed.
-
Artopia Gallery was established in October 2011 by sisters Cally and Bec Bugg, alongside their picture framing business, Artopia Framing and Photography. Now in its 15th year of operation, Artopia has earned its place as one of the leading galleries in the northwest of Australia, as well as being the only picture framers in the East Kimberley.
-
Artopia’s principal aim is to create a warm and welcoming space that showcases creative work from a wide variety of Kimberley artists. We endeavour to form strong relationships with all of our artists, providing a platform for their talents to shine. We love working with these talented friends to propel their art careers, and it is deeply rewarding to see them receiving the recognition they deserve.
-
We have curated a selection of incredible and varied artists from all walks of life. From local Indigenous painters to international immigrants, our focus is on displaying the incredible diversity and beauty of our home, the Kimberley.
From the heart of the Kimberley, by the heart of the Kimberley.

There are four tribes located here in the East and West Kimberley region in the far north of Western Australia. Each has their Wandjina Creation Spirits. In this painting we have Ngawah, the Wunambul tribe Wandjina Spirit in the centre, along with Kwini tribe and Ngarinman tribe Wandjina on each side.
During the cooler climate of March to August these three tribes would gather annually, where trade and intertribal marriages would be arranged. These gatherings are celebrated with the sharing of song and dance along with a large feast. The large red hill kangaroo and the smaller rock wallabies are hunted by the men each day and the women would collect the long neck turtles, dug up from the mud in dry waterholes.
The story of such events is not only in this painting, it can be found and seen depicted on the rock faces hidden in the mountain ranges and gorges of this vast and beautiful part of the world.
